We’d like to introduce Catherine Gilmore-Barnes who will be judging our international student show. Catherine began her career at New York’s School of Visual Arts where she was awarded the prestigious Bea Feitler Scholarship. Catherine has designed and art directed at a number of publications including The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone and Spy Magazine.
Currently at The New York Times she art directs the Science feature section in addition to a variety of special projects in print and online. Her work has been recognized and awarded by numerous organizations and publications including American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA), Society of Publications Designers, Society of Newspaper Designers, Type Director’s Club and Art Director’s Club. Her graphics are fundamentally focused on strong typographic solutions and an overriding sense of classic design.
What will Catherine be looking for?
“In judging illustration I look for originality, skill and creative problem solving. But my favorite illustrations are often the ones to which I connect on an emotional level.”
