In an effort to attract new subscribers, 3x3 is enlisting the help of some of its current subscribers. The initial testimonial campaign includes Aaron Meshon, Istvan Banyai and Taylor Callery. Each artist was asked to answer the question, “Why I subscribe to 3x3 Magazine”; text and artwork were supplied by the artist with design and production done in-house at HivelyDesigns, Brooklyn.
Founder and design director of 3x3 Magazine Charles Hively says of the campaign, “I’m always surprised by who does and doesn’t subscribe to 3x3. We’ve never made a big deal about that, but our hope is that these testimonials will attract new subscribers. Each of these artists are recognized within the industry. Some have been illustrators for a long time, others are just starting to make a name for themselves, this accurately reflects our subscriber-base along with art directors, designers, educators and students.”
Hively notes that the campaign’s next series will introduce art directors, designers and educators touting the magazine. He concludes, “I’m grateful to these artists for supporting our efforts not only with their subscriptions but also their unbiased regard for our publication.”
The ad series is scheduled to run in several publications and online.

3x3 International Student Show Judges Announced
Each year we select a group of illustrators who are also educators to judge our 3x3 International Student Show. And we’re always pleased with the results. Who better to judge student work than those who teach students on a weekly basis. And they can be extremely tough judges. They’re looking for who will be the next generation of illustrators; only the best survive the judges scrutiny which helps make our show so significant. Not every one gets in, there are no give-mes to top schools, or to schools that enter a lot of work. The judges don’t even know who the artists or schools are and since judging is done independently the results are totally fair and without bias.
This year’s international panel of illustrators/educators include Owen Smith, Art Center College of Design;Rick Lovell, Savannah College of Art & Design; Alexander Strohmaier, Universität für Angewandte Kunst, Austria; Michael Taylor, Stellen Bosch Academy, South Africa; Ronca Catell, University of Gloucestershire, United Kingdom and Toni Damkoehler, University of Wisconsin, Green Bay.
Our student show is open to all undergraduate and graduate students who were enrolled in any university, college or art school in any country during the 2011 calendar year. Only non-commissioned work is eligible. Winners will be exhibited in our award-winning 3x3 Illustration Annual No 9. Best of Show winners will receive a $1000 cash prize, Gold Medal winners receive a $500 cash-value award; all winners receive a complimentary copy of the annual.
Deadline for entries: March 30, 2012. There are no extensions. Enter online or by mail. Full details are on our website.

2012 3x3 International Call for Entries No 9
We’re ready to accept your entries in our 3x3 International ProShow. Full details are online; you’ll need to have your entries uploaded or postmarked by March 9—there are no extensions. Open to all illustrators, art directors, design directors, advertising agencies, design firms and publishers in all countries.
3x3 is the only true international competition for illustrators with nearly half our entries coming from outside the United States. Plus, our jury panel is made up of leading international art directors, design directors and illustrators. And all judging is done independently so we avoid any favoritism that might take place in a jury room. Our published annual appears on leading newsstands in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and parts of Asia reaching art directors and art buyers at the most affordable cover price of any illustration annual. And this year we will be offering a free digital version of our annual to a select list of art directors and art buyers.
This year’s judges include Jordan Awan, Art Director, The New Yorker, Andrew J. Nilsen, Art Director, SF Weekly, Gary Cochran, Art Director, London Telegraph, United Kingdom and Shayne Pooley, Creative Director, Ogilvy & Mather, Hong Kong. Our illustrator panel includes Brian Stauffer, Valeria Petrone, Italy, Rod Hunt, United Kingdom and Marco Wagner, Germany.
